Easter Post – Emotive Reality

Sorry for the late post.

Since the term “Emotive Space” is too misleading, I’ve came up with a new term and theory to be integrated into the project flow an objectives. The concept and idea of the project are still the same. It’s just that this “Emotive Reality” concept and “Alternate Reality” theory is better to be applied in explaining the aim of the project.

Emotive Reality

The concept is mainly based on two elements, Architecture and Emotion. In the norm, the built environment; the space and the architecture that evoke the emotion of the users. To show that the built environment and emotion are inter-related, The Emotive Reality is a project that explores the possibility of emotion influencing the built environment. So, instead of just a linear flow of architecture affecting the emotion of the users, the emotion of the users also influences the environment and the design of the space, hence creating an endless loop of symbiosis of both the elements.

The Alternate Reality Theory

In simpler terms, alternate realities are realities that exist at the same time, same context but on a different frequency, hence making it intangible and cannot be experienced in the existing reality. In theory, alternate realities can be experienced by travelling through a wormhole that is affected and produced by the leakage of similar transdimensional energy that exists in both realities. In short, to experience the alternate reality of an existing one, a sort of device or filter is needed to act as a “bridge”.

To relate back to the project elements; since emotion is an intangible element, the alternate reality of the project is the EMOTIONAL EXPERIENCE of the site; which can only be experienced by the usage of devices (Project System) that undergo several layers of methodology in identifying the transdimensional energy (Emotional Responses towards Trending Events) and translating them into virtual and physical structures, that eventually form the Emotive Reality (Alternate Reality).

In other words, the project changes the reality of the site from the existing context to another reality that symbolises the emotional experience of the context by manipulation of the virtual and physical elements.

Design Objectives

The project’s aim is mainly to point out the relation and importance of emotion within a living environment. The structure of the project somehow acts as a filter that allows the public to explore and experience the hidden reality of the context; the emotional experience of NY. In other words, it is a tool of communication for the people to understand the “real feeling” of NY as a living entity. The project is somehow resembles as the “beating heart of NY”.

Project System

In order to obtain the final and emotional response towards a trending event and to create the second reality (R2), the project consists of three emotion filtering stages.

  1. Identifying a trending event within the scope context (NY)
  2. Identifying the emotional responses towards the event
  • Word by word twitter analysis
  • Emotive Spaces, through motion, voice recognition, facial expression interaction

STAGE 2 PROJECT SYSTEM
  1. Translating the final emotional response in terms of Virtual and Physical Aspects

For the third stage, to reinforce the emotional experience of the emotive reality, I’ve integrated the physical aspect of the project, by having different configurations of form and shape of the platform. The different configurations of the platform will be derived based on the taxonomy study of emotion-shape translation which are based on Plutchik’s 8 main emotions principle. These different shapes of the platform will create different volume to the emotive reality space hence giving different kinds of emotional experience. The combination of the virtual and physical elements of the project will provide numerous possibilities of different emotional experience.

I am still studying the form and shape of the configurations based on the 8 main Emotions. This diagram of configurations below is just example showing the variety of volume that the design can provide.

As for the architecture part of the project I’ve started drawing the basic construction components of the platform and will explore and adapt more precedents that suit the project.P1

Thank you… am working quite hard. and yeah i know… harder.

  1. Your description is perhaps needlessly complicated. And you will not be present to explain your terms and concepts so to have helped my understanding I would have appreciated drawings and diagrams to clearly and succinctly give me the understanding that I need to read the project. However, from just the text-based experience of your terms and theory I would say there feels to be too many confusing layers emerging. Not that I would dissuade a richness and complexity but I would encourage you to not open up too many avenues that might hang unresolved.

To simplify, as I understand from what you have presented so far you are employing a system of analyzing social media to gain data on emotion expressed by individuals (who become a group by reacting to the same event) in response to identified events. This data triggers a reconfiguration of colored light and form within TS – drawing upon a taxonomy of colour/emotion and form/emotion translations. This translation of emotion into form and colour is I think what you describe as a wormhole or bridge. So this is what you need to design, your configuration of colour and form that allows us to see emotion as expressed collectively. Here you give a great clear description:
“The project’s aim is mainly to point out the relation and importance of emotion within a living environment. The structure of the project somehow acts as a filter that allows the public to explore and experience the hidden reality of the context; the emotional experience of NY. In other words, it is a tool of communication for the people to understand the “real feeling” of NY as a living entity. The project is somehow resembles as the “beating heart of NY”.”

The ‘refined keyword adaptation algorithm’ drawing is a good start as we understand that twitter is your source but show how the ‘algorithm’ works. How are your 8 main emotions gathered from the tweets?
Make a drawing to show how you translate a selection of tweets. Which of the 8 main emotions are they expressing? Which of the many conditions in your colour chart are they expressing? And show us what the result is – is this a configuration of colours.

The system 2 drawing I think still needs work. There are a lot of points particularly in the middle field that are confusing. Such as the relationship between voice recognition, culture and factors (and what is meant by the latter 2).

Who is Plutchik? What is this theory of the 8 main emotions? Explain and draw your research.

Where did the taxonomy of forms come from? This is intriguing but what does this mean and how will you use it? Is there an element of changing form in TS as well as the changing colours and what is the relation between these forms and the platforms? What are the structures or objects that will express the changing forms? Is it the platforms? If so you should start to explore how this is achieved.

For next week (among continuing work) choose 3 events and show us a collection of the social media expressions of emotion > the translation into colour and form > how this manifests in Times Square > how your designed platform and the billboards morph or alter.

I came across this project by Lebbeus Woods which may be of interest http://www.dezeen.com/2013/01/19/light-pavilion-by-lebbeus-woods-at-sliced-porosity-block/

Looking forward to seeing where you are up to next week. I think some focus on designing is the most important thing over this week – then we can talk about the really very nice drawings and what they can do for you. We can discuss the project story when we meet so move attention from the terms and theories for now and concentrate on the design instead.
