Causeway Designing – (Phase one infrastructure)

These are the drawings I’ve done so far for the causeways.¬†¬†From the six existing causeways I’ve chosen two key paths to trace that focus on the lighthouses being their tethering poles.     Not sure exactly what part of the causeways you are stuck on – but in general I think its a nice start – how did you choose the two out of six causeways to design? The existing causeways are paths to drag boats across the shingle into the water, perhaps it would be useful to show how you are adapting them to become floating pathways for people? How many buildings in the flooded site condition would they connect? At the moment its hard to see how they become the new roads in this water-based landscape – perhaps an image would help to show this? I think the details could become more dynamic with more arrows to show how the parts come together to form a coherent whole. How do the paths through shingle (as shown on your first page) translate to become paths cutting through the water – do your Scarpa details/ references play a role in how you design these pathways as channels through water? We always see the causeway as an isolated object in the drawings above but it would be useful to draw a detail of how it might meet an adapted house vs. the flood lab vs. its connection to the lighthouse as its tethering pole. Once you’ve shown us how the causeway works in detail, it would be good to also zoom out and show us an overview plan (similar to the ones at the beginning where you identify two to work on) to show how these causeways would multiply to create new pedestrian infrastructure in flooded Dungeness. Think about how you will present this chapter within the overall project – how it is designed at the micro scale through details, interacted with at the human scale, deployed at the architectural scale and then how it will exist at the landscape scale as a network of pathways?
